Baby AJ: Month 4 Update

AJ turned 4 months old on Valentine's Day! It still amazes me how much can change from month to month.

One of the biggest changes was how much more he enjoyed being in a sitting and standing position. Sometimes he'll cry when on his back until you lift him up. He just looooves to be upright and look around. He also finally discovered his hands. He will just hold them out in front of his face and stare at them and then shove them into his mouth. His hands are constantly in his mouth now. Still not really reaching out yet though. There have been a handful of times that I've seen him attempt to grab something. The winkle toy is nice because it is easy for him to grab onto.

Weight: 15lbs 15ozs
Length: 25 inches
Diaper size: Size 3
Clothing size: All 3-6 month size plus towards the end of the month, he started wearing 9 month pants. 6 month size was just too tight for his Buddha belly!

Nicknames: Bub bub , bubs, munchkin, baby boy, little man, grumpster, sweetie, sweetie pie, sweetums

Health: Still has yet to get sick. Fingers crossed! He did have his 4 month check up and had to get his shots. I'll be glad when he doesn't have to get so many shots every 2 months.

Sleep: Ah sleep. Maybe we're in a 4 month sleep regression? It hasn't been as great over the last month. Over the last month, we've been working on getting him out of his bouncy chair at night and into the pack and play next to our bed. Neither Jack nor I are ready for him to go into his crib in the nursery yet. We like having him so close to us at night. We would put him in there for his first stretch of sleep at night. The first few nights took us a few hours to get him to sleep. He would sleep in there for like 45 minutes and wake up crying. I would nurse him some more or we would give him the paci and it would take a few tries of this. Then he would sleep a couple of hours and around 11 pm wake up. Then we would put him back in the bouncy chair for the rest of the night. He gradually started sleeping longer and longer in the pack and play. He went from just a couple of hours in it to 6-7 hours sleeping in it. But over the last week he's been waking up a bunch again. For a few nights he kept waking at around 11 pm, 2 am, 4-5 am and then up for the day around 6:30 am. We were tired! We were so spoiled by his 8-11 hour stretches. I'm hoping he goes back to that soon. We also started leaving one arm out of the swaddle so hopefully we can ditch the swaddle all together in the next month. His naps are the same. Only about 25-30 minutes. Ah well. I keep hoping they'll get longer as he gets older. We've also backed off the use of the vacuum to get him to sleep. We felt we were starting to rely on it too heavily and sometimes we'd have to keep it on for his entire nap. So now we just use it every once and awhile at bedtime if he wakes up crying right after we set him down for the night. Phew! So much going on with sleep in our house right now.

Diet: Still only breast milk. I started back to work 2 weeks ago and I was so nervous about pumping enough for him, but it's been going well so far. I've actually been able to add to my freezer stash because I pump more than what he eats.

Baby Gear Love:
-Babybjorn Babysitter Balance: Love this bouncer although he is starting to tolerate it a little less. He prefers to be more upright. But he is willing to take a bottle in this thing, so we still love it.
-bibs: This kid is always drooling, so we need lots of bibs.
-Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Puppy: He loves this little toy dog that sings. He lights up when he sees it.
-Lamaze Play & Grow Jaques the Peacock: He loves to stare at this while in his car seat.

Loves: his bath every night, laying on his changing table, Fisher Price puppy, sitting up with assistance, standing with assistance, when we blow raspberries on his belly, chewing on his hands

Dislikes: being overtired, and getting vitamin D drops

Milestones: Rolling from belly to back more and more. He tries to roll from back to belly but only makes it onto his sides. He has finally discovered his hands. He will hold them out and just stare and them and then chew on them. And he has finally started trying to grab objects. He won't do it all the time. Feb 5th was the first time I ever saw him look at a toy and reach out and grab it. He can also momentarily sit in a tripod position all by himself.

I also went back to work when he was 16 weeks. I'm only working 8-12, so I get to be back home soon and spend the whole afternoon with him. It was so hard to leave him though and I miss him so much while I'm at work. We've hired a nanny that comes to the house to watch him.
Other things of note about month 4: 
-loves when we shake his arms. Makes him laugh every time.
-loves a game where I take him from a sitting position to a standing position. I'll using say "uuuup" in a high pitched voice and "doooown" in a low pitched voice.
-He loves to be tossed in the air or turned upside down. I have a feeling he's going to be a rambunctious little boy. He just loves to be tossed around.

-Loves, loves, loves to be in a sitting position. He can even sit in a tripod position momentarily.
-He has also really started to notice the TV. I have to turn him away from it or turn it off because he'll just stare at it. Sometimes he'll even smile at the people on TV.

-He loves to chew on his hands and has finally started trying to grab objects. He's not always successful, but he's working on it.
-Sometimes when he's laying on his back, he'll arch his back and stick is butt in the air.

-This kids squeals and screams like no other. It's so funny!
-He's got great head control now, and can lift his head up so high.
-A few times while he was on his tummy, he's tried to get on his knees.

He has finally started tolerating his car seat. The last couple of weeks, we've been able to get out of the house easily with him. We even went out to eat at a sushi restaurant!

Finally old enough to be worn forward facing! He loves it!

We bought a BOB revolution stroller. It's been so nice taking him out for walks in it and I think he enjoys facing forward.

Month 4 has been awesome! I love watching him learn and his little personality come out. I can't wait see him grow and learn even more. He's such a happy baby. Always smiling and squealing with joy. I feel so lucky that he's my baby.

Dear AJ,
Your Dad and I love you so much! We can't possibly imagine our lives with out you now. Our hearts have never been so full of love. You are the center of our life and we can't wait to see what month 5 has in store for us!

Baby AJ: Month 3 Update

I'm probably going to say this every month, but how has another month gone by already?! I keep getting all sentimental and looking through his photos since he was a newborn. I get a little sad thinking that 3 months has passed already and I have to go back to work in a few weeks. I'm going to miss him so much. While I'm happy that he's growing, I just don't want it to happen so fast. I really try hard to cherish every moment, which is hard sometimes!

Look how much he's grown since he was a newborn! And so many more leg rolls were added over the last month. I love baby rolls!

Weight: I'm guessing around 14-15 lbs. No 3 month check up, so don't know how much he weighs.
Length: We did our own measurement and he was 25 inches
Diaper size: Size 2
Clothing size: All 3-6 month size, I got really sad packing up all his 0-3 month sized clothing.

Nicknames: Bub bub , bubs, munchkin, baby boy, little guy, little man, monkey butt

Health: Very healthy. He has yet to get sick.

Sleep: Night sleep is great. He usually goes down between 8 and 9 PM and sleeps 8-10 hours for his first stretch of sleep. Occasionally he'll only sleep 6-8 hours for his first stretch, but that's like once a week. I nurse him and then he'll usually sleep another 1 to 2 hours. He is still in his bouncy chair at night. It's working for us right now, so we don't want to mess with it. We tried the pack and play a few times and he cried as soon as we set him in there. Now naps are another story. He is a terrible napper. I have the hardest time trying to get him down for a nap. Lately, he's been cat napping all day. He takes a 25-30 minute nap and about 4 or 5 of those during the day. There have been a few times where he napped 1.5-2 hours and one day he even napped 3 hours in his swing, but that is rare. We try to put him in his crib for a nap. The longest he has lasted in his crib is 1.5 hours. Otherwise he naps in the swing or my arms. Jack seems to be much better than me at getting him asleep. My reasoning is that I have the boobs and that's what he wants. We have also discovered the magic of the vacuum cleaner. If he's tired and fussing, we turn on the vacuum and he calms immediately. We will even leave it on and put him in his swing, and he'll fall asleep. It's amazing! I don't know why we hadn't tried this sooner.

Diet: Mama's milk. Breastfeeding is going really well. I'm starting to feel like we can make it to a year and beyond. I'm a little nervous about starting work next month and having to pump. I hope I can pump the amount that he eats while I'm gone.

Baby Gear Love:
-Swing- sometimes naps in it and it's a great place to set him down while we eat dinner.
-snugabunny bouncy chair - he sleeps in this thing every night
-aden + anais swaddle blankets - we don't swaddle him in these anymore but we fold them in four and use it as a blanket. I also have been using these as a stoller cover and on the floor for tummy time.
-Halo fleece sleep sack swaddle - It's colder now, so we put him in a fleece swaddle to keep him warm.
-Babybjorn Babysitter Balance - Love this bouncer. I put him in it while I eat breakfast and lunch. My husband also uses it to feed him a bottle.
-bibs - AJ is drooling like crazy so he is always wearing a bib now.

Loves: his bath every night, laying on his changing table, his cuddly toys that sit on his dresser (he smiles and giggles every time he sees them), falling asleep in mommy's arms after a nursing session, to sit upright with assistance and look around, stand with assistance, when I sing to him

Hates: when he gets overtired and I didn't put him down for a nap soon enough.

Milestones: Rolls over from belly to back, but not very consistently. He laughs and smiles all the time. He is also getting great head control. He also has started sucking on his hands.

Other things of note about month 3:

-He is still loving the bath. Daddy does his bath every night and he loves it! He no longer cries when we take him out. And he doesn't cry anymore when I lotion him up afterwards.

-He no longer will take the pacifier. I don't know why, but he wants nothing to do with it anymore. It's kind of a bummer because it used to work really well in calming him, especially in the car.

-He still enjoys hanging out on his changing table. He has now started staring at all the pictures hanging on the wall, and will even sometimes smile and giggle at them.

-There are a few stuffed animals that sit on top of his dresser. Every time we hold him next to his dresser, he looks down at his cuddly toy and smiles and giggles. It's the cutest thing ever. He will also stare at himself in that mirror.

-We have lots of little "conversions" with each other. I will say something to him and then wait for him to "talk". He babbles and squeals with joy. It's so cute.

-He is blowing bubbles all the time now and drooling a lot.

-He has started clasping his hands together and will hold onto object if you put them near his hands. He has also taken a liking to sucking on his whole hand.

-He's gaining great head control. I can carry him around with out having to worry too much about his head.

-He still loves to follow us around the room with his eyes and head. He has started to notice Sadie too. Also, he likes to watch me eat.

-He likes to pull both legs up into the air and then pound them on the ground. And he will raise his butt up sometimes when lying on his back.

-He laughs all the time now. I make it my mission now to do anything I can to make him smile and laugh. Sometimes it doesn't take much. He'll just look me in the eyes and give me the biggest grin. Melts my heart.

-He rolled a few more times from back to belly, but still not consistently.

A got to celebrate his first Christmas this year. Christmas Eve was spent at my Grandma's house. We had a wonderful ham dinner and lots of laughs. A got tons of presents! He sure was spoiled.

We spent Christmas morning at home and opened up presents. Then we headed about an hour away to visit Jack's parents and sister and have dinner.

I may have went a little overboard with the gifts for him this year. I couldn't help it! It was his first Christmas! We got him a quilt with his first and middle name embroidered on it. Also got him a stuffed zebra, Christmas book, a Winkle, and dangly toy for his car seat.

A also got to experience his first new years. We didn't do much on new years eve. We invited a couple over and their kids and we played games. We didn't even make it to midnight before crashing!

I did manage to get a family photo on new years day. Don't mind my purple PJ pants! Jack said I couldn't change out of my PJ's.

I've also been enjoying taking him on walks. He is finally content enough to sit in his car seat for a walk and he'll eventually fall asleep.

We actually braved a restaurant with the baby. It went better than expected.

Happy 3 months Baby AJ! Mommy and Daddy can't imagine our lives with out you. You bring us so much joy and happiness everyday and we love seeing you laugh and smile. We are excited for the next phase in your life!

Nursery Organization

I always love peeking inside people’s closets and drawers and seeing how they organize things. I wanted to do this post way back in October before I had the baby. But having him 11 days early kind of squashed my plans, and it’s hard to find the time to blog when you have a newborn to take care of.

Here is a peek inside the nursery closet, drawers and baskets. Lets start with the closet first.

It’s an ikea PAX wardrobe. I added three wooden drawers, two shelves and a hanging rod. I don’t know why I bought so many baby hangers. Boys don’t really have a lot of clothes to hang. Right now all I have hanging are jackets.

I also put a hook next to the wardrobe to hang the diaper bag from.

The top drawer housed all of his newborn clothes which have now been stored away and now 0-3 month size is in the top drawer. The containers are the SKUBB storage box set from Ikea. The clothes are divided by type: long sleeved onsies, short sleeved onsies, sleepers, socks, hats, bibs, baby legs leggings.

The second drawer used to have 0-3 month sized clothes which have now been replaced with 3-6 month sized clothing. I did the same thing and separated the clothes by type. I like having everything vertical in the container so I don’t have to go digging for a specific onsie or sleeper.

The last drawer houses baby blankets and towels.

Here is what the closet looks like now. I just took this photo yesterday a month ago (oops it took me way to long to write this post, but it essentially looks the same). I little bit messy, but still functioning the same. The top shelf has his bigger sized clothing stored away for future use, and at the bottom I store extra diapers.

The little cubby has extra sheets in the top two compartments. The middle two have swaddle blankets, and the bottom two have shoes. The little white box is to store AJ’s baby mementos. Right now there are ultrasound photos in it and our bracelets from the hospital.

In one of the blue bins, I keep the Aden + Anais swaddle blankets. The other one I store miscellaneous items and our baby carriers.


Now let’s move onto the changing table. This is what it looks like currently. I updated one of the frames and added some newborn shoot photos to it. On the top, I house wipes in a wipe warmer, coconut oil, lotion, Desitin (I don’t actually use anymore I like Triple Paste more), and alcohol-free hand sanitizer.


Let’s take a peek inside those baskets. The top left basket houses burp cloths which are just flat cloth diapers. 

I keep diapers in the top middle basket. Makes it very accessible for diaper changes.

The top right basket, has baby grooming items, baby health items, and wash cloths. Sometimes I use the wash cloths for diaper changes with some water sprayed on them.

I keep waterproof pads and receiving blankets in the bottom left basket. I like to use these on the changing table to catch spit up so I’m not constantly washing the changing pad cover.

The bottom right basket has extra wipes in it. My favorite wipes are the Costco brand wipes. They’re nice and thick.

Here is the back of the door. I have a mesh baggie on the top hook for dirty socks, so I don’t lose them in the wash. I also have a wet bag hanging from the top hook for really nasty explosive diapers. I put the poopy clothes in there and just throw the whole thing into the wash. Lastly, I have a laundry bag hanging from the bottom hook. This is a great spot for the laundry bag, because I can just throw dirty clothes into there while standing at the changing table.

Ok, now onto the dresser. I added lots of storage to the nursery which has really come in handy!

I pretty much keep all of his toys in this dresser.

The bottom drawer has all of his books that don’t fit in the basket by the glider and on the shelves. The middle two drawers just have more toys in them.

DIY Christmas Photos

Back at the beginning of December, I did some DIY Christmas light photos with the baby.

This was the set up.

I draped an unused Ikea curtain over our headboard, then draped some icicle lights. I placed a boppy under the white duvet cover and propped the baby on it. I think I just got lucky in that he fell asleep when I placed him on the boppy. I had nursed him just prior to starting the shoot.

I have a Canon Rebel Xsi camera and I used my Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lens. I didn't have great lighting so I upped the iso to 1600 and set my aperture low. I shot a lot of the shoot in Av mode (aperture priority mode). I'm still learning and I'm not completely comfortable with full Manual mode yet. Av mode allows me to set the aperture and the camera picks the shutter speed for me.

I used an aperture of 1.8 to 2.2 for the shoot. The low aperture also allows for a shallow depth of field which blurs the Christmas lights in the background. I also like to over expose my photos by +2/3 to +1. I think it makes the photo look much brighter.

I'm overall pretty pleased with how the photos turned out. I know they're not perfect, but I love them. These are also straight out of the camera. I didn't do any post editing because I just didn't have the time and I really don't know much about editing photos.

Another trick I learned recently is back button focus. It basically allows me to use one of the back buttons on the camera to focus and then the shutter button takes the photo instead of pushing the shutter button halfway to focus the camera. It's handy because I can focus once and then take multiple photos as long as I don't move.

Once I was happy with the shots with the lights, I attempted some others like this one with the ornaments.

Soon the little guy got tired of me moving him around and woke up, and I ended up with photos like this. That's how I knew the shoot was over. lol

Baby AJ: 2 Month Update

Wow! Baby AJ is already 2 months old! What a difference a month can make. Baby boy has gone from being a little blob who only ate, slept and pooped to a little guy with an emerging personality.

It amazes me how much he has grown in the last two months. Look how scrawny he was at just 1 week old!

Weight: 13 lbs 2 oz up from 10 lbs 11 oz at 1 month appointment
Length: 24 inches
Diaper size: Size 2
Clothing size: 0-3 month and moved up to 3-6 months in sleepers and pants in the last couple of weeks

Nicknames: Bub bub , bubs, munchkin, baby, little guy, little man, monkey, Grandma calls him bright eyes

Health: Perfectly healthy besides battling a little diaper rash. He had his 2 month shots today. Poor little guy.  It's hard to see him get so many shots. I think it was harder on me than it was on him though. He seems to be doing ok from the shots so far.

Sleep: AJ's sleep has improved dramatically over the last month. He started having a 5-6 hour stretch at night and then every few nights we would get a 7 hour stretch. Well now the last about week and a half, we've been getting a solid 7-8 hours for his first stretch of sleep. Followed by another 1 or 2, 2 hour stretch. It's really nice to be getting such a solid chunk of sleep, but I still feel pretty tired as the day goes on. He's still sleeping in his bouncy chair though. I think Jack and I are a little nervous about moving him to the pack n play. I think once he hits 12 weeks, we'll start putting him in the pack n play next to our bed or we might try him out in his crib.

Diet: Mama's milk. Breastfeeding has been so much easier this month. My supply regulated so I don't get engorged anymore and AJ only nurses one side at a time for only 5-6 minutes. Feeding him is quick and easy. I've also started using my nursing cover a lot more and nursing in front of friends and family.

Baby Gear Love:
-Swing- it's a hit or miss but sometimes he'll nap in it
-snugabunny bouncy chair - he sleeps in this thing every night
-aden + anais swaddle blankets - we don't swaddle him in these anymore but we fold them in four and use it as a blanket
-Summer Infant swaddleme -he had to move up to large size this month, we swaddle him in these every night
-Babybjorn Babysitter Balance - I splurged on this thing last week and I love it! He was getting a little heavy for the snugabunny bouncer. I can put him in this thing and he'll happily sit in it for about 10-15 minutes and watch me go about my business. It has allowed me to get some breakfast in every morning.
-Sassy Go Go Bugs - I hang these from his car seat and he loves to just stare at them. It's kept him quiet for car rides a couple of times.
-Beco Gemini Carrier - Jack and I love this thing. Baby boy really doesn't like his car seat so I wear him when we go shopping together. Jack will wear him around the house or on walks if he gets antsy in the stroller. It's pretty much a guarantee that he'll fall asleep in this thing.

Loves: Sleeping on mama or dada's chest, dozing off in my lap after a nursing session, baths, diaper changes, being carried around, his pacifier, being in the Beco carrier, when mommy or daddy sing to him or talk to him

Hates: tummy time if left on tummy for too long, being taken out of the bath, mommy or daddy dressing him, car seat, when mommy tries to get the boogers out of his nose, when mommy tries to rub lotion on him after his bath

Milestones: Rolling over from tummy to back a few times. I think he puts on too much weight and can't do it anymore. He can lift his head momentarily while on his tummy. He has also started social smiling. Love, love, LOVE seeing him smile. It is the highlight of my day.

And now bullet points on AJ's 2nd month and lots of photos!

-He loves his bath every night. He doesn't really need one every night, but we feel it helps in establishing a bedtime routine. Sometimes he'll be really fussy at night and the bath seems to be the only thing to calm him down. We get lots of smiles and giggles during bath time. Daddy uses a cup and pours warm water over his belly. He doesn't like to be taken out of the bath though. A lot of the time he cries when we take him out.

-We discovered the amazingness of the pacifier. We held off giving him one for the first month so he doesn't get nipple confusion as was suggested in my breastfeeding book. It's really amazing how much it can calm him down and help him fall asleep.
-He's also started growing in some new hair

-He seems to enjoy getting his diaper changed. He's always in a good mood and smiling and babbling when we put him on his changing table for a diaper change. Often times I leave him up there for a time and try to coax as many smiles out of him as I can.

-I believe we have a morning person on our hands. Munchkin is just so happy and smiley in the mornings. It's when I get the most smiles and babbles out of him.

I have the Wonder Weeks book and these are the things I've checked off that he does for wonder week 8:
-smiling when he sees people he recognizes

-babbling and mumbles a series of sounds as if he is having a conversation with me.

-he makes short bursts of sounds like ah. He can be pretty loud! And he has started making this clicking sound with his tongue.

-if you talk back to him, he'll continue to "talk" to you. I love our little conversations.

-He can hold his head upright more and more and loves looking around. I still call him my little bobble head. He loves to look around when I carry him upright.

-He turns his head and will watch me walk around the room. He now will sit in his bouncy chair alert and watch me make breakfast. It's so cute the way his eyes and head follow me around the room. I talk to him and narrate what I'm doing.

-Little man now kicks his legs and flails his arms when he gets excited.

-He has started making faces. He furrows his eyebrows when he is concentrating or watching intently. I've noticed a couple of times, he'll lift up only one brow. Both my mom and grandma can do this.

-A few times over the last month, he has rolled from his tummy to his back. I think he puts on too much weight and can't do it anymore.

-He has started to take interest in his toys. He has these little bugs that hang from his car seat and he loves to stare at them. He especially likes the one that jingles. He will also now look at the toys that dangle from his play mat.

-Baby boy has taken an interest in staring at ceiling fans and lights.

-He loves to stare at his chevron curtains while I rock him.

-AJ's Great Grandpa and Nana came all the way from Utah to meet him for the first time. 

-Attempted a photo shoot that didn't go so well. lol

-AJ got to experience his first Thanksgiving

 -We had a second Thanksgiving the next day, but I only managed to grab a family photo for our Xmas card

-Right after Thanksgiving we started decorating for Christmas

 -My mom is a teacher and is off on Holiday break. She came over everyday last week to spend time with me and AJ. It was so much fun hanging out with her and I loved having the company everyday.

-Last week when my mom was over, we started putting him in his crib for some play time. He enjoyed laying there and watching us sing and talk to him. We got lots and lots of smiles out of him!

-I also took him to visit daddy at work for the first time. All the ladies were gong crazy over him.

Happy 2 months Baby AJ! Mommy and daddy love you so much and can't imagine our lives with out you! We're excited for the next phase in your life and what changes will come in your 3rd month.

Final Bump Progression

I finally got around to putting together my final bump progression collage. It's so weird now to look back and see how big my belly got. I'm so so happy that I stuck with it and took a photo almost every week. It's great to be able to look back on these photos to see how I progressed.  

I did make it to 38 weeks, but I was lazy and didn't take my bump photo on time. I went into labor before I even got the chance!

New Mama Must-Haves

I've compiled a list of items that have helped me survive the first month as a new mom. These items are what has helped me with my recovery from a vaginal delivery and with breastfeeding. 

1. Nipple Butter: I like this Earth Mama Angel Baby Nipple Butter. This is the particular brand I bought but anything similar will work. You'll need something to put on those nips if you're planning to breastfeed. I brought this with me to the hospital and started putting it on after every feeding when I noticed I was getting little red sores on my nips. I may have just got lucky and got a baby with a good latch from the start, but I've never had any pain with breastfeeding. 

2. Earth Mama Angel Baby New Mama Bottom Spray: I'm not really sure if this stuff helped with my healing but it sure felt nice to spray it on my lady bits after using the restroom. It smells really nice too. 

3. Breastfeeding Book: I read this book before I had the baby. It was nice to be informed about breastfeeding before attempting it. I also referenced this book the first few weeks. 

4. Water Bottle: Breastfeeding makes you thirsty. It's good to have a water bottle handy. I like the Eddy because it can topple over without spilling and you drink it like a straw which tends to make me drink more. 

5. Maxi Pads: Always infinity are my favs; they are absorbent and really thin. Have these on hand before delivery. You will definitely need them. 

6. Tucks: These refreshing pads feel so nice on sore lady bits. 

7. Nursing Pads: I've now found I don't like the disposable nursing pads. They're itchy! I'm not a heavy leaker, so the washable ones are better for me. I like bamboobies and these ones.
